'Bricks Of Berlin', 2011
After a trip to Berlin I was inspired to create a work with bricks. The enormous amount of bare brick walls that stood tall and wide and dominated the city, giving birth to this available space for graffiti. In turn I also wanted a piece that was concerned with the way the German government have tried to deal with the horrors of their past, and bricks seemed to be a great vehicle to show this. Since the Second World War Berlin has seen many changes in an attempt to cover up and re-build. Art Nouveau was one of the many types of architecture used to try and hide the traces of the war, although it didn't progress to a massive extent in German, it was very big throughout Europe, and so I went on to a Nouveau style. After research I discovered the structure, had been made before by Antonio Gaudi; the Helicoidal column. The people of Germany have also done there own covering up in the form of graffiti, which is where the coloured chalk that smears the column comes into play.
